Reading Week [Open Thread]!
Asalaamualaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatu,
OPEN THREAD! This means you comment, we read, you comment again, and we either pick a fight or learn something.
Reading week is upon us! Of course, it goes without saying that any sort of reading is blasphemy for the next 10 days, but since this isn’t school work, it seems like a great time to get a lot of website news up to date.
First, as you may have noticed, I’ve been playing around with the colours and added a winter effect. I’m a newbie photoshopper so just to let you guys know these things aren’t difficult if you try them, it doesn’t take much skill to google/youtube a quick lesson for what you want and implement it. Anywhoo the idea is to have some colour and thematic changes corresponding to stuff that’s actually happening, like for example the snow effect came on snow day, and something like a student NOT reading would correspond to reading week =). Constant updates like that sort of give the feel that this website is still alive, and that I haven’t spontaneously fluctuated into another dimension, at least not yet anyway. This is where you guys come in, what do you think of the plan? Do you have any sort of cool effects or days in mind? Do you think such updates are better to be more frequent or less frequent? I didn’t want to make this into a poll because I need a little bit more detailed feedback.
Speaking of polls, can someone please look to the right and tell me WHAT is going on? Over half of our people are officially giving their school progress a death sentence. This is not cool guys, it’s a bit alarming if such a large amount of us aren’t feeling hype for school. Yes I know the education system sucks, but there still are ways to make the most of it. I wrote an article a few weeks back about doing better in school in case you missed it. Obviously that’s not really going to do much, but the point is to start a dialogue and get people to thinking that maybe it’s possible to really enjoy school. Drop a comment, especially if you voted (which all of you should if you’re on the website). What’s wrong? How are we going to fix this? Is there anything the MSA can do?
Another thing on the technical side is I’m thinking about integrating facebook comments on the website. This is really just a thought at this point and I have a bit of research to do, but I think it might encourage people to comment and *share* articles with their friends more. For some reason people are not too keen on commenting or *sharing*, they think you need a log-in account (you don’t need ANYTHING), and some feel overly-formal when writing. I want people to feel a part of a community on this website, but there’s no “u” in “community” at this point – oh wait there it is, err you get what I mean.
Also, we’re in need of blog submissions, so start cracking. If you have something interesting to share, write it, send it in, and as most of the authors have noticed I do give feedback and help throughout the process. Your brothers and sisters will benefit, you can tell your parents you’re a published writer, and they in turn will exaggerate further and tell their friends over dinner that you’re a best-selling author. I haven’t personally written as much as I’d like to, so I’d like to know what type of articles and categories are you interested in reading?
Oh yeah, this is a reading week thread too. Some of us have had our tests before and some will have it after insh’Allah. 10 days is a really long time guys, there’s a lot of potential to get some really beneficial stuff done (both Deen and dunya) and also have a ton of fun, so what do you have planned? Maybe your ideas will serve as encouragement for the benefit of others insh’Allah.

Interesting Places You’ve Prayed

I sat there watching a flask of green liquid attached to a strange looking contraption. Still amazed, despite seeing the same thing before already, I stared curiously as the solvent in the green potion bubbled and crept up into a glass tube filled with streaming water, only for the gas to liquefy again and drop

Did you have to close your eyes for that?
Haha inside joke ;)

I am insanely tired and sleep deprived this past half week, and have to wake up at 6 am to go to work tomorrow, so its going terribly lol :)
I loved the comment about the butterflies saboor!! Oh wait… wrong article.. lol! You see my point now right?
I personally, have fallen behind on biomech and phys lectures. They are recorded, so as useful as that is (WHICH IS INSANELY USEFUL) it allows you to slack off and fall behind in class which is terrible. Both classes have 2 midterms, one in feb , one in march. So as soon as i did the midterms in feb, i started fallig behind in order to catch up to the next class lol. InshALlah i plan to use the break to catch up on those lectures. Those and Psych. :-(
And ASA is having a snowbaording trip so at least I have ONE day of doing something…. rather than going to york to study everyday as i have the past 3 reading weeks ive had :(
PSS!!! Scott library is closed modnay for family day!!! OH NOES, what will i do on monday now?????? :(
-
PS i love the updates to the scenery, they look amazing when you apply them but i’ll be honest. I am a very…. zone out-y person. I dont catch attention to details lol. It could be a disease for all i know… so yeah i dont realize the difference until its pionted out.. but in which case i remember the differnece and have loved it each time!!
Keep it up as long as its not too demading i think its awesome!!
And you’re doing a WONDERFUL job of bringing the community back!! I’ve come across TOO MANY people wanting that, I just hope inshAllah they find their way onto here at least! :-)

Hah where to begin,
Speaking from experience, recorded lectures are a death trap. They pile up like crazy and are a pain to go through, so just go to class lol.
If I knew you were going with the ASA I would have came and rounded up a crew. Things got weird with the GTA MSA ski trip, they had a mis-communication with our MSA and Ryerson’s tickets got sold out pretty fast =(.
Thanks for the feedback about the blog stuff, what do you think of integrating facebook comments though!?
Uhmm. Many things. Essay for geo, fix up math assignment, clean up, maybe cook a bit, visit my madresah aapa, fix my pants (alteration), start research on history essay (which will probably not happen), and MAYBE go to the autoshow.
Now those are all my number 2 priorities, of course number 1 priority is pray regularly inshaAllah rather than sleeping most of the time.
-
Oh and I forgot, the biggest priority after #1: not to YouTube so much lol (actually none if its possible inshaAllah)

That’s very true the breaks are really useful times to set good prayer habits that are then easier to carry on, especially for those who unfortunately tend to miss fajr.
I personally am getting a little fed-up with how much technology is taking from me. The reason why it’s so draining is because nobody really sets firm limits and 5 extra minutes x 100 turns into a big chunk of the day,
Try a complete youtube-free day once or set really firm schedules for stuff (no more youtube after x time, period) and see how good it feels.

Asalamu alykum,
It’s a good time to catch up with family and friends.
“Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him maintain the bonds of kinship.” (Bukhari)
Weight your deeds!
Umar (Radiallahu anhu) said : “Bring yourself to account before you are brought to account. And weigh your deeds before your deeds are weighed.”
Get in shape and use your time wisely!
The Prophet states in a Hadith: “There are two blessings in which most people are in great loss: good health and free time.
Visit your neighbour
Abdullah ibn Amr, a companion who was well versed in Hadith had a sheep slaughtered. He repeatedly asked his servant: “Have you sent some meat as a present to our Jewish neighbour?” When he said that several times, he added: “I have heard Allah’s messenger (Pbuh) saying: “Gabriel has repeatedly recommended me to be good to my neighbour until I have thought that he would include him among my heir.
Perfect your Islamic knowledge
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “One who treads a path in search of knowledge has his path to Paradise made easy by God…” – Riyadh us-Saleheen, 245
One more peace of advice. Lets try for for the Sake of Allah to maintain Haya and modesty in our interaction amongst brothers and sisters.

AsSalaamu Alaykum, I think that the brother above stated some excellent points, maa sha’Allah, tabarak’Allah. And I totally agree with maintaining the haya. May Allah help us to become modest slaves, and forgive us our shortcomings. Ameen.

Salaamualaikum guys,
Lol I don’t know how this turned into a freestyle session, not that I mind it is an open thread. There’s some nice talent here tabarak’Allah and some of the comments have really really cracked me up. Remember there’s a joint Islamic Relief-MSA dinner coming up insh’Allah ;).
With that being said everyone can continue dropping rhymes here but as others have said I’d like to remind myself and others to please tread more carefully with addressing the opposite gender. Nobody has really done anything wrong or broken any rules yet, but it’s a fine line guys and since it’s a natural attraction to be playful with the opposite gender sometimes we don’t realize when we’ve crossed into flirting territory and I wouldn’t like to see anyone make that mistake.
I know some people might be confused and I don’t want to be a buzz kill but from my shoes as having authority I have a lot more to be accountable for to Allah for what goes on here. And if someone thinks this is too strict or extreme, ask the man from Banu Isra’il named Barsees who learned this lesson the hard way.

Akhi, jazakallahu khair for sharing. Cannot believe how the state of such a man changed for the worst of worse. It’s so important to realize in what ways Shaytaan tries to influence and whisper,, we truly seek refuge in Allah from him.
SubhaanAllah, may Allah protect us from the shaytaans whispers and increase us in emaan. I’ve heard this story many times before, alhamdulilah the reminder benefits the believer, just shows that nobody is guaranteed this religion. Abu Musa al-Ashari said, The Prophet salallahu aleyhi wa salam said, Before the (last) Hour comes, there will be a tribulation like patches of dark night. A man will get up a believer and go to sleep a kafir(disbeliever), or will go to sleep a believer and get up a kafir (disbeliever) Aboo Dawud. Uthmaan radiAllahu anhu use to say if he put one foot in jannah he didn’t feel secure until he put his second foot inside. InshaaAllah lets be cautious and careful like the salaf as saleh were, may Allah have mercy on them. And Allah is the turner of hearts, may He the Exalted turn our hearts to His obedience.
Wasalam aleykum warahmatullahi wabarakatu.

Why does everything on msa become a freestyle or a poetry session? lol
I am thinking of travelling outside the city, or hiking on bruce trail, and reflecting on Allah’s beatiful creation, Sabour you down. Or is this my third sign after the motorcycle, and the picture. LOL

lol or too much time on our hands lol
im not hating, you guys do your thing, lol just try to keep up with the noble ettiqutes of the Anbiyyahs, and the Sahabahs InshAllah. Where you could have fun, and keep it nice and halal.
BTW sabour, who calls you for Fajr from MSA exect or someone outside it. And is there someone who calls you before Fajr as well or no. Jazakullah khayr.
lol nah that’s not a sign and yeah I’m so down. Everything’s moving really fast in my life right now and I need some time to get away and do some serious reflecting.
I don’t know much about the Fajr program maybe Khalil can answer that one, if anything I can buy you a rooster, but that might be sign #3 hehe ;)

And I was just thinking where the 40 comments were coming from…until I went down and saw your not-so-average-xyz comments.Lol astaghfirullah.. laughing too much can harden the heart.
The background’s better Alhamdulilah, and updates can be frequent depending on how many ppl even visit!
As for the poll, I’ll only be satisified on the day I get my shahada.. Ameen ya rab!And seeing as theres an increase in traffic and everyones come out of the woodworks, it should be good sign they were busy studying in the first place! May Allah use us for the betterment of the Ummah.
Facebook comments is great idea, ppl love wajhbook for some reason,so they will be attracted to the site more often..so yeah facekitabs good.
I would send in something, but its always some poetry and I don’t want to commit ‘murder by neglect’. Insh’Allah something serious in the future insh’Allah.
And sister umm-abdurahman and br imran’s advice are excellent BarakAllahu feekum!

Assalaamu ‘alaykum wa Rahmatullah,
I definitely encourage you to submit some poetry inshaaAllaah! Clearly if you don’t share it, you’ll start resorting to some anonymous kunya freestyle poetry/rap battles online to get it out of your system lol.
I’d also like to encourage the interesting Abu’s and Umm’s to get their stuff out there as well. We’ve got some talent up in the MSA. Just remember to keep it proper inshaaAllaah ta’aala and you guys are good to go.
