Ungrateful
Author: Kulsoom Kazim
We should take everything as a blessing, and not be saddened over small things.
We need to open our eyes and see those who smile despite every reason to cry.
Take a look around and see the people who are not happy with their Blackberries,
Or at those stressed with home renovations, because of extra money on their hands.
Take a look at the upset child without his favourite meal – rather he ate at a restaurant.
Now close your eyes, and imagine those without a roof on their head.
Imagine the little boy who continues to smile despite having lost a leg.
Imagine having only one piece of bread to eat every day.
Just imagine the lives of others on the Earth.
Why? Why are we so ungrateful?
Are we ungrateful because we have extra clothes to wear?
Because we have a variety of foods to choose from?
Are we upset because we have to share a room with our siblings?
Or are we sad because we have to attend school with our friends?
Is that a reason to be ungrateful?
We often wake up day after day and go to school with big frowns on our faces.
We greet people with negativity and walk around as if we haven’t been given anything.
We think so much of ourselves that we forget about the whole planet around us.
It’s so sad, pathetic actually. The world can be such an evil and selfish place, but we don’t have to be!
Take a moment to think about others.
Put yourself in others’ shoes and walk around to understand the paths they have to tread.
“Indeed, We guided him [i.e., man] to the way, be he grateful or ungrateful”
[Quran 76: 3]
We can choose one of two paths, so why not choose the one with the better ending?
Why not choose the one that will benefit you in this world and the hereafter
Open your eyes, and look around now, you have endless blessings to be grateful for.
Open your eyes, and look around now, you have every reason to say “Alhamdulillah“

Masha’allah well said !

It is reported that Shurayh – Allâh have mercy on him – said, “If I am afflicted with a calamity, I praise Allâh for it four times: I praise Him because it wasn’t worse than it was, I praise Him when He gives me the patience to bear it, I praise Him for enabling me to say al-istirjâ’ (‘To Allâh we belong and to him we will return’; see Al-Baqarah: 154-156 ) in hope of a great reward, and I praise Him for not making it a calamity in my religion.”

I wish that everyone would understand this, and just take everything as a blessing. It’s not easy, but it’s not impossible either.. i’A May our ummah reflect upon themselves and make out to be better people in this world, and attain paradise in the hereafter!

AsSalaamu Alaykum Wa RahmatuAllah, Kulsoom! Great article sis. Topic was very much needed, a lot of us forget how much Ar Rahman has blessed us with and continues to bless us with, yet a lot of us remain ungrateful. Allah says ‘O Man!, What has made you careless of your Lord The most Generous?’- Surah Al Infitar. SubhanAllah, what has made us ungrateful? Why do we ignore what we have been given out of Allah’s bounty and take his blessings as insignificant. Take in for example how Allah says ‘Have We not made the earth as a bed, And the mountains as pegs? And We have created you in pairs (male and female, tall and short, good and bad, etc.). And have made your sleep as a thing for rest. And have made the night as a covering (through its darkness), And have made the day for livelihood. And We have built above you seven strong (heavens), And have made (therein) a shining lamp (sun). And have sent down from the rainy clouds abundant water. That We may produce therewith corn and vegetations, And gardens of thick growth.’ Surah An Naba. May we All be amongst those who give thanks to Allah Aza wa jal often. Allahuma Ameen, Ya Rabbil Alameen. Once again, awesomeee article Kulsoom<3 MashAllah, TabarakAllah.

Very nicely put together thought you have there sister kulsoom. Truly many of us are ungrateful, and this reminder brought me back to reality.
But I don’t quite get the point of the picture? How does it have anything to do with ungrateful :S ?
Can anyone clarify for me

MashAllah this article gives me a lot to reflect upon, I found the ending to be so true to itself, that one has every reason to say Alhamdulilah.
As was the story of Prophet Ayub, who lost so much in his life but still kept his faith in Allah firm, and was eventually rewarded for the trials he overcame for the sake of Allah. We too need to continue thanking Allah for every other thing we have. As long as we have our sight, our smell, our touch, our taste, and our hearing, or even if we have a few of them, or even if we have none of them, but have our lives; it is truly something to thank Allah about and not take for granted.
